  • Termites (ages 4-8, skate twice per week),
  • Girls' House (skate twice per week),
  • House (ages 9+, one practice and one game per week),

About the RSVP Bone Builders Program
Two years ago, RSVP Bone Builders, the osteoporosis exercise program began a pilot class at the Dana Recreation Center. The success of this pilot class has led to an explosive expansion of the program. Currently there are 41 such classes up and running throughout Rutland and Addison Counties, involving 80 volunteer instructors who are serving more than 600 participants.
Five of these classes are being held under the auspices of Rutland Recreation and Parks Department, four of them at the Dana Recreation Center and one at the Godnick Adult Center

Using volunteer trainers at donated sites, RSVP brings the Bone Builders program free of any charge to anyone who wants to participate. The program has been proven to prevent the development of osteoporosis and in some cases can even reverse the effects of the disease. Because it improves both strength and balance, it promises to protect against fractures normally associated with osteoporosis. In fact, one-half of all American women will experience a fracture due to osteoporosis by the age of 75. Many of these fractures lead to fatal complications.

In addition to weight and balance training, the program features education in nutritional and medical issues relevant to osteoporosis.

The RSVP Bone Builders program is based on research published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and other respected publications reporting that participants in strength training made significant gains in their bone density. Bone density testing of RSVP Bone Builders participants show an average gain in bone density of 2% over one year. Since there is a normal expected loss of 2% annually, a two percent gain is actually a four percent gain.

RSVP Bone Builders is supported by grants from the Vermont Women’s Fund, the Vermont Community Fund, the Southwest Vermont Agency on Aging, the Cabot Cheese Company, the James T. Bowse Health Trust, and others.
For more information contact RSVP in The Dana Recreation Center at 775-8220

    Godnick Programs Fall
READING AND DISCUSSION CLUB - This program is sponsored by RSVP and the Godnick Adult Center. The club meets on the last Tuesday of every month at 2 pm. The general public is encouraged to join this group. All ages are welcome. A new book is chosen for each month's discussion. In August we will discuss ”East of Eden” by John Steinbeck on Tuesday, August 24, at 2 p.m.. John Steinbeck's passionate and exhilarating epic re-creates the seminal stories of Genesis through the intertwined lives of two American families. The result is a purely American saga set in Steinbeck's own childhood home, the Salinas Valley of northern California. The valley is a new world both idyllic and harsh, and Steinbeck sings to it with a personal nostalgia that is clouded by the knowledge that this valley-as all human dwellings-is the location for as much tragedy as triumph. All are welcome. Books are available at your local library, Book King or Annie's Book Stop. For more info call Michele at 775-8220 or Lori at 773-1853.

PRANA YOGA with Tammy Brown, who has been practicing Yoga since 1975 and was certified as an instructor in May 1999. LIBRARY BOOKS - The Rutland Free Library and the Godnick Center have gotten together to relaunch the Godnick bookshelf! Once a month the bookshelf will be restocked with novels, biographies, books on tape and other library materials that can be ”checked out” by Godnick patrons. They are available in our TV. Room. If you have any special requests let me know in the office.

MONTHLY COMPUTER CLASS - Starting Monday, July 19, at 10 a.m. Jessamyn West from the Rutland Free Library will be at the Godnick Center once a month to teach computer classes. Tenny Brook Preschool
Tenney Brook Preschool, a preschool run by the Rutland Recreation and Parks Department since 1969, has had a very successful year in our new location at the Dana Recreation Center. The fenced in playground with swings, playground equipment, sandbox and green space is a perfect, safe place for our preschoolers to explore their outside environment. When it is rainy or bitter cold the Dana gym allows the students a chance to try out our new tricycles, play ball and run around.
Jane Brown, who has her bachelor’s in early education has been with the preschool for 15 years and has seen many of her earliest students graduate from high school. Stacy Sturtevant is our assistant teacher and is finishing her second year at Tenney Brook. Stacy had seven years prior experience in early education before coming to Tenney Brook. With our great staff, super location and reasonable rates we are an excellent choice for your preschool child.
Enrollment for the 2004/05 school year will begin the week of March 15 for our current students. We will begin enrolling new students at a registration night on April 8th from 6:30 – 8:30 PM at Tenney Brook Preschool. For more information call 773-1856 or 773-1822, ext. 13.
